A&P Prepares Green Way Debut
A few weeks ago I saw a new organic yogurt on the shelves of the Pathmark I was visiting. I picked up a container and, being a food reporter, read the label. Well, what’s this? A familiar address! Must be a new private label from Montvale, N.J.-based A&P, Pathmark’s parent.
It’s called Green Way (Slogan: “There’s their way, and then there’s Green Way”). The yogurt was distributed by OnPoint Inc., and certified organic by Quality Assurance International. The container included per-serving call-outs for milk fat (1%) and calories (130).
While some products, like cloth laundry bags and the yogurt, have been enjoying a soft launch since December 2008, the big push will come around Earth Day, according to a company spokesperson. And, a supplier familiar with the brand told me there will be more than 100 products out by June.
Green Way’s product line extends from paper products, organic sauces and condiments to produce, according to the spokesperson, “with many more categories being added throughout 2009.” My supplier added that A&P is making a concerted effort to coordinate all merchandising for a consistent store-wide image, and plans to use in-store radio, promotions in their Easy Solutions flyer and demos during the launch period.
A&P is probably among the last of the big regionals to offer a natural/organic private label. Pathmark used to offer n/o products sourced from Wild Oats; however, that ended when Wild Oats got snatched up by Whole Foods Market.
Has it been worth the wait? If the quality of the yogurt is any indication, I think so – the packaging is cool, the name is different, and products I am already familiar with (including those of my supplier friend) are of high quality. We’ll be eager to see what the rest of the Green Way label line is like.

Appreciated the article; tough finding anything on Green Way.

I’m curious about this yogurt - no where does it mention having active yogurt cultures of any kind. Is it possible that there are none?
July 17th, 2009 at 3:12 am
I’ve also tried in vain to find more information about this line and am concerned that there is no indication of Active Cultures on the label. I do like the yogurt line but besides lower sugar content the main reason I eat yogurt is because of it’s probiotic benefits. Maybe I just have to call…A&P??

Wow, we got a lot of inquiries about the Green Way yogurt’s culture content. Indeed, it is not listed anywhere on the container… So, we went directly to the source. Lauren LaBruno, senior communications manager for the retailer told us this:
“We are in the process of updating the label and to respond to your specific question: Contains Live and Active Cultures: L. Thermophilus, S. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus, Bilfdus, L. Casel”
So, hopefully, you’ll be seing the change shortly. It’s interesting that, with all the news surrounding the benefits of probiotics (and the runaway success of Dannon’s Activia line), they would have made sure to include this information from day one!

I came across their products at Food Emporium and decided to try the vanilla yogurt and soy milk. I must have gotten the new label because it does state on the side that it contains active cultures. I’m hooked on the yogurt, tastes great, I’ll definitely go out of the way and get more. The soy milk was good, but I think I’ll stick with Zen Soy, I like the taste of it better.

Green Way organic products are fantastic. Besides the great line of fresh food products, there is a line of Green Way household cleaning products including laundry detergents, dishwashing detergents, and cleaning sprays.
And your children can go to school the “green Way” with notebooks.
Great savings and great for the environment, too.

This is my first time trying Greenway Yogurt, and I must say I am disappointed. The container was 3/4 full, the flavor of the blueberry and strawberry was tasteless. The yogurt was very thin, which makes me question it being yogurt or a facsimile. My family and I will not eat the other 6 containers, therefore I would like to be reimbursed for my waste of money.

I came across some Greenway products for the first time at my local A&P and I must say I was excited to see them. Not only because they were organic but more because they were local. As I am getting into the “slow food” movement, it was nice to see something local in my local supermarket.
The Greenway Salsa was excellent. I will definitely purchase it again…

I recently bought the Green Way Organic Vanilla Yogurt. In my opinion, the flavor is ok and the consistency is too watery. Will I continue to buy it? It depends..if my fave greek yogurts are on sale, then no; otherwise yes. I prefer the higher protein and thicker consistency of greek yogurt.

I tried the yogurt several times and it is too thin and watery with some disturbing clumpiness. I will not purchase again.

Whoa, Greenway….what’s your corporate philosophy about healthy/organic food when your Chunky Organic Peanut Better contains cane sugar and palm oil? sure, they’re organic - but they’re sure not healthy.

Greenway soy milk is unquestionably the most delicious soy milk I have ever tasted. Now I am stuck going to Waldbaums (or A&P) because no other soy milk can compete!

Greenway peanut butter is fabulous tasting and healthy. I don’t care if it has some sugar and palm oil in it — I am slim, active, and eat very healthy food. But Steve Dentel wants Greenway to change their peanut butter. Stores are filled will pure peanut butter that separates and tastes bland — buy those brands. Or, Steve, you could make your own with a blender.
Greenways peanuut butter is not sweet, and the palm oil keeps the oil and peanut solids from separating — it has a luscious velvety texture. Just perfect.

I have been eating organic for more than 30 years now. I recently bought a Greenway chicken and felt immediately as I was cleaning the chicken that this was not organic. Organic chickens do not have the inside fat and excess membranes that this chicken had; so I went online. I found that in the last several years the “organic” restrictions have been relaxed and now large companies have been putting out “organic” beef and poultry as well as dairy products that do not meet the standards that organic used to. Needless to say, my stomach was in knots. Free range, cage free, requirements can be as little as 20 minutes outside if that. Feeding cattle soy and corn feed instead of grass and are not grazing most of the day. I am not able to find any info regarding Greenway but as stated, I know an real organic chicken when I am cleaning one. I am now looking into this matter and have been looking to purchase my beef, chicken, dairy, etc. from a local farm where I can see how the livestock are farmed. I am informing as many people about this “organic” situation as possible. I have come to trust certain labeling over the years and obviosly let down my guard. If you have any info to state otherwise regarding your products, I would greatly appreciate it.

Recently bought at WALDBAUMS Greenway natural peanut butter by Onpoint, Montvale NJ (not the organic version): good but too much salt. Can’t find the no-salt added version nor any phone listing for ONpoint to ask them if they have it and where. IT RAISED MY BLOOD PRESSURE!!!

I wholeheartedly agree with Steve - the peanut butter is not a healthy choice from a brand promoting itself as an organic, healthy alternative. Added sugars and palm oils may be good for Jif and Skippy, but not for my family. Why should adding sugar to simple food like peanut butter be the norm?
May 6th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
There are two versions of Greenway’s peanut butter. Organic which contains sugar and palm oil, and all natural which the only ingredient is peanuts. I suggest you buy the all natural version. BTW there is nothing wrong with palm oil or natural cane sugar in moderation. As far as the chicken is concerned, I have purchased the chicken cutletson several occasions and have never seen anything that would leave me to believe it was anything other then organic. I would like to be able to gather more information about the product line, though.

I’m trying real hard to find our if your Natural Peanut Butter Chunky is Non-GMO. If it is, please so state, and I will continue to buy it. Europe has wised up and stopped using GMO products. I plan to do the same.
May 14th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
As far as i am concerned Charlie, Organic practice prohibits the use of GMO seeds and ingredients, I would appreciate a non GMO label on the product though.

Like the Greenway products at Waldbaums…However, if you are going to make an organic peanut butter, or yogurt, what is the point if you put it in plastic containers.
You’ve completely defeated the entire “organice “green concept”. There is un certainty about foods stored in plastic and leakage into the food, and the conatainers are horrible for the environment. Use GLASS!!!!! Or paper conatiners for the yogurt….people wil pay the extra $$$$. Otherwise I will have to make a separate trip to WHOLE FOODS. Also, bring in more organic produce!!! The Greenway yogurt, if made with organice milk, why is it so watery ??? Can’t you make an organice yogurt that has the consistency and taste of Greek yogurt….
like the kind that begins with CHO.

I LOVE the Dilutable Cleaner in Lemon Grass - I use it on EVERYTHING, even my hardwood floors to clean spills and it does NOT bother my animals. The only problem is I can’t get it anywhere by me. I live in Lancaster County, PA and the nearest Superfresh where I found it is almost an hour away. I will continue to use this great cleaner, and I also love the refreshing scent!!

The honey crunches and oat cereal has organic expeller pressed canola oil in it. I was under the impression that all canola oil is GM. I read somewhere that organic means it is not GM and expeller pressed means it is not refined. Is this true? Can anything with canola oil in it be called organic?
